XI’AN, China / TAMPA, Fla. (June 4, 2019) – IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Group company, announced today the addition of the IRONMAN® 70.3® Xi’an triathlon. The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Xi’an triathlon will take place on Sunday, September 15, 2019, making it the fourth IRONMAN 70.3 event in China for 2019. Registration for the event will open on Wednesday, June 5.

“We are ecstatic about adding another IRONMAN 70.3 race in China, especially in a city that carries a rich history and hosts millions of visitors each year,” said Jeff Edwards, General Manager of Operations for IRONMAN China. “Xi’an provides ease of access for all travelers, and a variety of cultural experiences to sample, as well as what will be a fantastic race course for athletes and spectators.”

The city of Xi’an gained world notoriety with the 1974 discovery of the Terracotta Army, but it was previously well-known as the historical center of China. The provincial capital of the Shaanxi Province, Xi’an features six UNESCO historic sites that highlight the city’s importance, having served as the political, economic, and cultural hub of ancient China. Today, it serves as one of the top tourist destinations in China.

Most of the race activities will take place at the Xi’an World Expo Park located in the Chanba Ecological District, just northeast of the central city and close to Xianyang International Airport. The single-loop 1.9K swim will take place between two dams on the Weihe River. The generally flat two-loop bike course features a mix of divided highways and parkland roads. The three-loop run course and finish will be located within the expo park.

The IRONMAN 70.3 Xi’an triathlon will offer a total $25,000 USD professional prize purse as well as 50 age-group qualifying slots for the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupo, New Zealand and 30 age-group qualifying slots for the 2020 IRONMAN World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawai`i.
